Carbon removal

What is CDR (Carbon Dioxide Removal)?

Methods that remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere: nature-based solutions, engineering approaches and negative emission technologies.

What is CDR ?

A primary activity that removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere via nature-based (non-engineered/engineered) or technological approach. Also may have a secondary utility to remove trace amounts of other GHG during the process.

Purpose

To absorb more emissions than the removal activity produces, and storing it in natural or engineered storage solutions. To complement carbon reduction activities. To complement other climate technologies that aim to achieve net zero

Types of CDR: Nature-based

Non-engineered

Sequestration with minimum technology focus on natural solutions Example: Establishing new forests etc. Limitations: Susceptible to carbon removal overestimation

Engineered

Use technological innovation to enhance the removal of carbon by natural resources. Example: Marine Snow, Ocean Alkanisation etc. Limitations: Uncertain downstream by-product & overall ecological effort

Types of CDR: Negative Emissions Technology

Negative Emissions Technology

Technologies that remove carbon from the atmosphere. Example: Direct Air Capture etc. Limitations: Costly to deploy Uncertain downstream by - product Production & storage limitations
